I am pleased today to announce my intention to run for re-election and continue my service as your Sheriff of Washoe County.  During the past twenty-nine years I have had the pleasure of serving the residents of Washoe County.  My career with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office has allowed me the unique opportunity to experience first-hand the breadth and depth of the services provided to you by a modern and progressive law enforcement agency.

During the past few years as a Nation, State and County, we have gone from unprecedented growth and prosperity to unimagined economic difficulties and recession.  The difficulties we have experienced in recent months have reached across all social and economic levels and have forced us to reevaluate our essential needs and how to allocate our time and resources to address those priorities.  My honor in serving as your elected Sheriff has not been diminished by these challenges. As a non-partisan elected official, I have continued my life-long commitment to providing Washoe County with the most professional, economical and efficient law enforcement services possible within the fiscal and budgetary constraints imposed by the twin pressures of shrinking revenues and increasing costs.

My efforts to effectuate cost-savings and efficiencies within the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office in providing these services has been augmented by my successful efforts to secure governmental and private grants and inter-local agreements to obtain the latest technology and to avoid unnecessary duplication of services by local law enforcement agencies. My vigorous pursuit of grant monies to assist this mission has resulted in the increase of such funds from 2.5 million to 15 million dollars.  This is a direct benefit to the taxpayers of Washoe County.

My efforts in connection with the Washoe County Honorary Deputy Sheriff’s Association is a textbook example of my administration’s ability to tap the knowledge, time and resources of concerned local citizens from all walks of life to address criminal and anti-social behavior on a proactive as well as a corrective level.  This effort has generated monies as well as immeasurable in-kind aid to the Sheriff’s Office.

I have been tried, tested and I have succeeded as your Sheriff.  The challenges of continuing to lead what I believe to be one of the finest law enforcement agencies in the country are only exceeded by the satisfaction of knowing that my continuing successes is built upon the shoulders of our highly motivated and professional workforce and our willing partners within Washoe County who share my vision and commitment.  In announcing my candidacy for re-election as your Sheriff, I pledge to you that I will continue to strive to maintain this agency’s outstanding performance and the inclusion of the community in accomplishing our mission to maintain Washoe County a one of America’s safest and enjoyable places to live.
